ABSTRACT

Mickey Mantle was arguably one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Mantle’s heavy drinking and philandering was largely hidden from fans by his teammates and the media, but with the ending of his baseball career and the increased drinking, it could no longer remain under wraps. In 1993, after an embarrassing charity dinner where a drunk Mantle insulted his host, Mantle entered the Betty Ford Clinic and became sober. If one is in the midst of flow, the timeless quality is merely a part of the experience; if one is in between stories and in the midst of grief, this expansion of time can make it seem as if the void and the pain are endless.
