ABSTRACT

Physical security measures are the physical and technical systems used to protect people, property, and information from theft, damage, and other types of harm. Of the three general types of countermeasures which are used to prevent, mitigate, and eliminate risk, physical security measures are the most tangible. Site features can include fencing, gates, perimeter barriers, landscaping, signage, and security lighting. Building features can include doors, locks, security glazing, safes, storage cabinets, and other physical security devices. Electronic security systems can include access control systems, alarm monitoring systems, closed-circuit television systems, security intercom systems, and other electronic security devices. Security operational measures can include security policies and procedures, employee security awareness training, security incident reporting procedures, security program management, and security staffing. An underlying principle for providing good security involves a concept called “Concentric Circles of Protection.” This principle is also sometimes called “Security in Depth” and involves the use of multiple “rings” or “layers” of security.
