ABSTRACT

Berbers span a very large portion of North Africa with very large concentrations in Algeria and Morocco. However, Kabyle Berbers have faced serious oppression in Algeria where the relentless policy of Arabization has led Kabyles to find very creative ways of resisting and of protecting their cultures including the declaration of their autonomy and the introduction of their new flag. The chapter examines how the creativity demonstrated by Kabyles at home and abroad helps them harness tangible political and cultural power. This research explores the diverse forms of resistance by Kabyles and the recent changes in their strategies as well as the impact these have had.
