ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the Nicholas Michael O’Donnell Marginalia Project. It introduces O’Donnell and the significance of his personal library to provide context, and discusses Omeka, the platform on which the project website is built. Using Omeka, an open-source web platform developed in 2008 by the Roy Rosenzweig Centre for History and New Media at George Mason University. Omeka is an open-source web-publishing platform primarily designed to showcase cultural collections and exhibitions. Omeka combines the functionalities of web content and collection management systems, as well as digital archival systems. The chapter illustrates potential pathways that could be used as a framework for similar initiatives engaging with a cultural archive. An Omeka site is made up of three ‘building blocks’: items, collections and exhibitions. The St Mary’s College and Newman College Academic Centre librarians were the first collaborators to join the project, enthusiastically giving permission and access to the O’Donnell Collection.
