ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to introduce Personal Construct Psychology (PCP) and demonstrates how its use can support, explain and enlighten professionals when working with people with acquired neurological conditions and their families and friends. PCP is a theory developed by George Kelly in 1955. It is a comprehensive theory of personality and applies to everyone. Kelly proposes that everyone is in their ‘own particular way, a scientist’. PCP has been applied to many domains, including clinical, educational and organisational fields, and a body of research has developed. F. Gracey et al. used PCP and qualitative research to investigate how people construe themselves after brain injury. PCP is a conversation-based approach with techniques and tools that can be used flexibly to support the therapeutic process.
