ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the findings from this recent study as well as other national and international evidence that supports the associations between literacy and mental wellbeing. It first addresses the relationship between mental wellbeing and literacy as a skill before focusing on literacy attitudes and behaviours. Finally, the chapter presents some directions for future research in the field, based on gaps identified. It refers to how a person feels and how well they can cope with day-to-day life. The chapter focuses on aspects of mental wellbeing that affect every single person, such as life satisfaction and self-belief, which have also been linked to serious mental health issues such as depression. It highlights both mental wellbeing and literacy is associated with socioeconomic background. However, our analyses did not show any associations between children’s socioeconomic background, literacy and mental wellbeing.
