ABSTRACT

The Texas Medical Association handed out a questionnaire in Texas about corporation-physician dissociation. Hoping to curb rising health-care costs, some companies have long wished they could choose their workers’ doctors, with an eye toward cost-effectiveness without sacrificing quality. The tension between physicians and healthcare organizations is further increased by the fact that physicians are not highly valued in many of the organizations. Twenty-three percent of respondents saw cases where physicians lost employment, contracts, or hospital privileges after raising issues about hospital regulatory compliance or patient care quality, and 35% of physicians were concerned it could happen to them. The pressure of increasing and achieving quality care, dealing with autocracy, and the time spent on cumbersome electronic medical systems really place doctors in a stressful situation. The loss of control of healthcare makes physicians frustrated and in need of finding alternative hospitals or alternative jobs.
