ABSTRACT

This chapter describes more supplements that benefit diabetes sufferers. For instance, it is presently not known why plasma taurine levels are lower in persons with diabetes, but supplementing it has been shown to reduce diabetic retinal neuropathy. Taurine is antioxidant and anti-inflammatory and it also lowers production of Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs), thereby reducing LDL cholesterol oxidation, and reducing the risk of endothelial dysfunction. Other supplements featured are vitamins, including vitamin D3, B12 and B6. in connection with their anti-inflammatory activity. Chromium is cited for its specific promotion of insulin, and Co-Enzyme Q10, in connection with reducing insulin resistance. Dietary supplementation of magnesium is cited because magnesium deficiency has been widely reported in connection with hyperglycemia, and zinc is anti-inflammatory.
