ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a definition of “evidence based,” essential in setting the stage for the credibility of the biochemical research on glycemia control that can be obtained with “functional foods,” and botanicals/herbals. In fact, there are many prescription medications that hold synthetic compounds that regulate cell function and act on blood glucose control in the same way as constituents in readily available botanicals/herbals to reduce sugar absorption and lower insulin resistance.

It is proposed that some of these may be added to a diabetes integrative treatment program to enhance its effectiveness. Included in the listing and description in this chapter are anthocyanins in blueberry, silymarin in milk thistle, serotonin derivatives in safflower, berberine, and many more.
