ABSTRACT

This chapter is written to move the conversation on ethical decision-making in ethnographic practice toward new insights and possibilities. The author situates the various chapters through a dialogic orientation towards ethics that distinguishes across three (while implying that there are more) spheres – the sphere of internal review boards, the sphere of ethnographic fields and a sphere between these. Each sphere is constituted of a different kind of conversation. By reframing the insights and issues through dialogue the author is able to locate patterns of insight/issues and futures/possibilities. Specifically, three domains of issue are raised through the following questions: (1) How relevant are review board procedures for ethnographic practice? (2) How inclusive can our ethical practices be? (3) How can our ethical accountability foster social and personal transformation? Future possibilities are organised around the following three: (1) education as dialogic opportunity; (2) different as different; and (3) self-care.
