ABSTRACT

To conclude, this chapter demonstrates how radio is an embodiment of social change in China, and reviews the evolution of radio production and listening in China to the present in order to tease out a number of overarching themes. In particular, this chapter points out the crucial role that the Chinese state has played in shaping radio, as well as drawing attention to the speed and direction of the modernization process as it has impacted on this medium. Finally, the author identifies some of the opportunities that radio has missed in China, and points to a number of significant challenges that the Chinese state faces in mobilizing radio in the digital age, in its pursuit of a more balanced approach to national development and global engagement.
