ABSTRACT

Soil reinforcement is summarized in this chapter. Also, the reinforcing effect of randomly distributed fibers in soils is discussed. In construction practice, fibre-reinforced soil has become a viable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly ground improvement technique to improve stability and control deformation in various applications, including retaining structures, embankments, foundations, slopes and pavements. In this chapter, natural fibers, geosynthetics, geotextiles, geogrids, geocomposites, geocells, nettings and geomembranes are summarized. Uses of geosynthetics in civil engineering have been detailed and case studies are also included.
