ABSTRACT

Authoritarian exploitation takes on all sorts of forms. Respondents report how an aging authoritarian mother exploits her own weakness, how an authoritarian sister exploits her position as the least loved child, how an authoritarian child exploits the guilty feelings his antisocial behaviors provoke in his parents. In the following respondent’s story, the authoritarian in question exploits his cancer as a way to manipulate and control his girlfriend. Should we expect an authoritarian who is dying to exhibit more compassion or conscience than a robust authoritarian in the prime of life? Respondents say no.
