ABSTRACT

Authoritarian contact leads to negative consequences. These include lifelong sadness, lifelong anxiety, an outsized craving for substances and behaviors (and also outsized revulsions, like being revolted at the sight of food if mealtimes were humiliating), a damaged self-image, an inability to concentrate or to think clearly, and more. Almost always, sadness is part of the picture: sadness, despair, grief, or some sister darkness such as suicidal thoughts or self-mutilating behaviors.
