ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the field of Victorian book history, including the production, circulation, and reception of print. It gives overviews of scholarship on nineteenth-century publishing and print technologies, illustration, and periodicals. It also points the reader to key works in the fields of bibliography and textual criticism with relevance to Victorian studies. The chapter reviews recent work on the history of reading and book use in Britain, America, and beyond. Finally, it discusses the relationship of Victorian book history to the digital humanities and the digitization of our cultural inheritance.
