ABSTRACT
Project relevance: Previous analysis indicated that immediate construction on the very soft alluvium would be unwise as this soil layer is very loose and saturated. The properties of this soil need to be improved to make it more appropriate foundation. This chapter will introduce the principles of soil consolidation and discuss techniques commonly used in engineering practice to calculate the amount of soil settlements and the time necessary to accomplish this task.
