ABSTRACT

Capitalism, Sport Mega Events and the Global South is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 – ‘Global capitalism and sport mega events’ – addresses the links between global capitalism and sport mega events and discusses the influences the global capitalist system exerts on the dynamics of sport mega events. Chapter 2 – ‘Sport mega events: discourse × practice’ – problematizes the universe of sport mega events knowledge production. Chapter 3 – ‘The socioeconomic consequences of the sport mega events’ ‘tour’ through the Global South’ – analyses attentively the socioeconomic consequences of the tour of sport mega events through the Global South in an independent study. Chapter 4 – ‘Local impacts of global events: Porto Alegre and the 2014 World Cup’ – addresses specifically the perceptions of Porto Alegre residents affected by the 2014 FIFA World-Cup-related works. Chapter 5 – ‘Conclusions’ – are presented in sequence. Here, the fundamental aspects raised throughout the book are recovered and discussed in the light of the problematisations and the results achieved.
