ABSTRACT

This chapter of the book provides specific discussions based on literature that deals directly with sport mega events. The introduction to this chapter addresses and discusses the most commonly accepted definitions of the concept of sport mega events and the characteristics of sport mega events linked to their constant growth, especially in terms of budget and profit. Then, the book presents issues related to how knowledge has been produced in the area, the dominance of ex-ante studies, and their relationship with promoters of sport mega events, being used as a discursive resource. Ex-post studies are then identified throughout the discussion as presenting more realistic and accurate results. Subsequently, research on the resident/local of sport mega events hosts is discussed. Afterwards, the book points out the academic discussion on the main objectives of countries and cities bidding to host sport mega events: image projection, economic outcomes and legacies. Later, the book displays a list of common criticisms highlighted in the relatively few attempts at academic recordings and discussions of criticisms of sport mega events in general. Also in this passage, the book engages with the ‘June Journeys’, the massive demonstrations that took Brazilian streets during the Confederations Cup in 2013.
