ABSTRACT

T he above narrative exemplifies the complex challenge of initiating relationships for con-temporary youth. Intense intrapersonal questioning is prompted by diverse and seemingly haphazard forays into sexual exploration and a search for meaningful interpersonal connection-whatever that is. Many youth express confusion about what meaningful connection is all about, whether they are capable or worthy of such connection, and how they can move toward satisfying and fulfilling connection. Meanwhile, their social lives often include hookups-short-lived and intense sexual exploration apart from emotional connection that rarely builds beyond one or two “steamy” meetings. Although such casual sexual interactions may occur throughout the life course, experiences with these quick and intense sexual interactions are particularly interesting to consider in the context of late adolescence and young adulthood as youth develop their capacity for intimacy and skill in initiating close relationships.
