ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the system for caregiving. Caregiving is the second of Bowlby's biological systems looked at in the model. This is a system designed to notice that care is required by another, and some ability to supply some satisfaction to that need. It requires appraisal skills, and skills in communication. Caregiving can often be from an older and wiser other, with whom an affectionate bond has been established, but not just necessarily so. When this careseeking and caregiving are working in a complimentary way then both can carry on about their business whatever that might be, it is this accurate and required responsiveness that equals goal correction. McCluskey's research considers in great detail the minute aspects of the interactions of careseeking and caregiving and explores the nature of what happens when careseeking goals are met. Caregiving when effective, is having some skills/tools/ language to discern their needs, explore what satisfaction might be like.
