ABSTRACT

The topic of what a worthy woman is seems to pervade the entire manuscript in a range of ways, and it certainly challenges the reader to engage with the ambiguity of the concept. This chapter argues that the contents of this manuscript suggest the compiler had an interest in the mechanics of medieval courtly love literature. Many of the concerns raised in the debate between James Cameron and Patty Jenkins are the same concerns raised by the Nine Ladies Worthy, and by the manuscript context of the poem. The impact of the male and female gaze may determine whether or not a text or film is a feminist role model. The Nine Ladies Worthy appears to be a simple poem that presents, in nine stanzas, descriptions of each warrior woman and the famous deeds she performed. Wonder Woman’s image has been used in feminist iconography throughout the decades.
