ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses a study of the language social work practitioners and teachers use. It is concerned with the attempt to discover some of the meanings that can be attached to the 'generic' and the 'specific' elements in social work, and with the extent to which it is helpful to analyse social work practice into an activity that takes place in a number of different 'settings'. The language of social work also contains many references to ideas outside its own boundaries, which are, in any case, very ill-defined. The book argues that these references and similarities should be exploited. It considers the terms social workers use and how their language compares with that of other disciplines. The book is devoted to some studies in the language of social work, with the aim of encouraging further exploration.
