ABSTRACT
One of the disadvantages of traditional theories on translation, as we have pointed out several times, is that the 'standard' Translation Operator (TO) is regarded as a culturally neutral operator. But as every translator knows, a TO does not put languages into watertight compartments and enter at will and exclusively into one or another linguistic universe. The TO has here both to weigh up the Translation order given by the Translation Initiator (TI) and consider the Language Culture 2 (LC2) public before putting forward possible translations – which will certainly include keeping the Language Culture 1 (LCI) term. Journalistic discourse presents several interesting features from the point of view of Translation Studies. As has often been noted, a newspaper is the reflection of a certain number of choices, among which the most important are ideological and economic ones. However much one believes in the 'virtues' of LC2-influenced translation, it is the LCI context which usually prevails in any translation.
