ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an explanation for the possible relevance of metafiction in historical sociolinguistics. It addresses the need for historical sociolinguistics to do what it needs to bring in valuable original data, while also retaining a sense of plausible history. Experimental in nature, it seeks to reconstruct contexts around letters written by Charles Andrews in his participation for India’s freedom struggle. Because Andrews was such a close friend of Gandhi’s and because he played a key role in the Indian political scene at the time, I decided that one effective way of showcasing his original documents would be to construct semi-fictional narratives around them that would capture the general historicity of both the man and the times.
