ABSTRACT

The main business done by the majority of native banks, especially in the Peking group includes deposits and loans. Native banks make their chief profits out of the interests received in excess of those which are paid. Deposits are further classified into fixed deposits, current deposits, deposits of other modern banks, temporary deposits, and other kinds of deposits. The rate of interest varies according to the duration of the deposit. In most native banks of Peking and Tientsin, the rate of interest on fixed deposits is from 4 or 5 to 8 or 9 per cent per month or from 6 to 10 per cent per year. Two kinds of advantages can be derived from the loans: one is for the society, and the other for the enterprise itself. The native banks may supply capital to entrepreneurs who are competent, but Jack money to carry on business; then productive enterprises may be launched.
