ABSTRACT

The Federal Republic is one of the world’s leading industrial nations and an important member of the European Community. Agriculture contributes 2.7 percent. Factors which contribute to this economic achievement are technical expertise and management skills in industry; high education and training standards; and the industry of the population. Schooling in the Federal Republic is free and compulsory full-time from six to sixteen, and compulsory either full-time or part-time from sixteen to eighteen. German universities have traditionally been characterised by high academic standards, a concentration on pure research, restriction of entry to students aged twenty who have completed thirteen years academic study, lengthy study programmes of a body of knowledge rather than semester or annual credits, and a flexibility to move from one university to another during a degree programme. The admission of students auditing courses is one of the ways that the university carries out its mandate in continuing professional education.
