ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a range of ideas to support the design and delivery of teaching and learning activities which can be adapted to suit individual needs. The planning, presentation and monitoring of spelling material should complement associated literacy topics to harness and exercise the interactive aspects of literacy and language. Planning ahead enables spelling tutors to: link new learning into a programme of needs, prepare ideas for effective memory prompts, and so on. Game-play provides engaging, repetitive and flexible application which is ideal for developing, storing and recollecting spelling memories. When players have become competent in their game-play, new vocabulary and spellings can be added. For example, once the rules and riddles of suffixing have been explored, verbs can be used to play ‘Three in a Row’ spellings. Presentation methods will vary according to the topic in hand, but they should be influenced by a number of factors.
