ABSTRACT

To help spelling memories move from short-term to long-term memory and back again, a number of supportive strategies can be employed such as: making the target spelling more significant, interesting and dynamic to heighten its impact on attention and memory; providing memory-tabs which act as a link between a word and its spelling to support accurate recall over time; and so on. Dicey Spellings is designed to incorporate factors which engage both learners and learning. It is particularly effective for use with individual words with irregular spellings. The more often learners recall something, the stronger they make its impression on the brain, improving the ease with which that memory can be triggered and accessed in the future. Spelling memories need to be rehearsed to help create strong pathways to and from long-term memory. Spelling Piles allows learners to revisit a past spelling pattern using a quick game.
