ABSTRACT

This chapter evaluates elements of the logistics support "tail" for Versatile Avionics Shop Test (VAST) at one time. The Department of Defense has established an extensive program of competitions, reviews, and tests for development of any new weapon system technology. This process is intended to minimize both the cost of new systems and the risks of technical failure, since any new technology brings such risks with it. The physical design of VAST stations was also being evaluated and modified throughout this period, while the computer simulations of the workload and Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department operations were underway. Since the AIMD organization design was considered to be valid for VAST, as for any Peculiar Ground Support Equipment tester, and since VAST was only one of a large number of other shops, there was no readily apparent need to change the management or information processing procedure.
