ABSTRACT

The tendency often has been to use kind of logical manipulation, designed with the explicit purpose of highlighting the truth-relevant content and making it precise, as a starting-off point for some sweeping reductionist epistemological operations on predicates, by subjecting them to rigorous phenomenalist or physicalist tests. In order to clarify the concept of truth, it is necessary to investigate the conditions under which truth comes into existence, or, expressed differently, the conditions under which thought hooks onto the world. The truth-relevant content is forged, and can accomplish its role as a vehicle of reference, only within the context of historical mental and speech acts by thinking and judging agents who address themselves to the world of objects from the horizon of their beliefs, and their general interests and needs. The phenomenological epistemology embarks on exploration of the truth-relevant content with an eye to certainty, but has no explanation to offer as to what makes a truth claim objectively valid.
