ABSTRACT

Two significant strategic activities involve deciding what business the organization is in and determining the degree to which outsiders will control, direct, and dictate important decisions. With these perspectives in mind, a representative sample of classic strategic orientations is discussed including (1) The Diffusion of Innovations Model, (2) The BCG Growth Market Share Grid, (3) The McKinsey Matrix, and (4) SWOT Analysis. These overviews are used to address issues regarding appropriate strategic planning choices that indigenous, ethnic, and rural people need to consider. In specific, the chapter will:

1 Focus upon what goals organizations seek to accomplish, the amount of autonomy given to specific divisions, and the degree to which upper management assumes control.
