ABSTRACT

The traumatic nature of change and the need for its mitigation are addressed with specific reference to indigenous cultures, ethnic groups, and traditional communities. Hurtful potentials are discussed with reference to the concept of anomie in which socially acceptable goals can no longer be achieved in socially acceptable ways. This concept provides a means of dealing with the pain and dysfunction that often accompanies economic development. This discussion is augmented with an introduction to the concepts of “tyranny of the majority” in which people’s needs are denied after being outvoted. Perspectives, such as the “concurrent majority,” demonstrate how minorities can protect their rights. Specific goals of the chapter include:

1 Appreciating the impact of change and how it can trigger dysfunction and pain.
