ABSTRACT

MY mother had a crush on America. After her tragic experiences during World War I, she would have dearly loved to leave Turkey behind and emigrate to the United States. Finally, she got her wish years later. My own feelings for America were shaped by my mother’s love for it. Long before I even knew where exactly America was, I thought of it as the Promised Land—the land of milk and honey.
