ABSTRACT

Initial signs of the success of DirectX were revealed during the 1995 Christmas season where a whole new crop of DirectX-enabled games was released—and without any Lion King disasters. Although Robar eventually learned of Bonner’s association with Playboy, he was intrigued from the start. Of course, one of the great aspects of the Roman Empire theme was: Everything in excess. Like Judgment Day, Pax Romana was built on a grand scale, again by the Two Downtown crew, in a sports arena near the San Jose Convention Center where GDC was taking place. In addition to the lavish décor, the excessive amounts of food and drink, and the various activities everywhere, there were two live lions, one in a cage and another with its trainer, leashed but loose behind a cordon of velvet ropes. In 1996, DirectX was introduced officially in Japan, and the launch party was themed around the American Wild West.
