ABSTRACT
Chapter 5 discusses the following questions: How did Russia plan and execute its intervention and aid to Syria since 2011? How does ‘preventing another regime change by the US’ translate in Russian foreign policy? This chapter proceeds by detailing Russia’s commitment to preventing further regime changes and military interventions in the Middle East by the US and the EU. This chapter also discusses Russia’s strategic calculus in MENA, of which its decision to intervene militarily in Syria in support of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has been a crucial component.
