ABSTRACT

Chen Renbing adapted to Mao Zedong's regime yet his motives were questioned because he made public his honest interpretation of events. The chronology of events that shaped the lives of all study in America intellectuals of Chen's generation was traumatic. Although the overall disposition of Chen's generation of United States returned students was tragic for them as individuals, it can be said that overall the indirect influence is positive and may have paved the way for China's leaders. The next generation of intellectuals who have studied abroad are in a position to influence policy in the new millennium and owe a debt of gratitude to their brave predecessors like Chen Renbing. The new generation were born amidst Mao's myopic anti-intellectual campaigns. The new generation faces sweeping economic changes geared more towards capitalism than socialism in the establishment of special economic zones and joint ventures.
