ABSTRACT

This Chapter discusses the interpretations on economic policy differences by the contending leadership factions during the Cultural Revolution, on the rationality of Maoist view on economic development, and innovations introduced during and since the Cultural Revolution. The impact of the upheaval on the economy in terms of production, management, and worker and peasant unrest during the Cultural Revolution is discussed in a number of entries. It examines the changes brought about by the Cultural Revolution which have continued into the post-Cultural Revolution period, such as the reorganization of trade unions, and new social relationships in industrial organizations. Several entries present analysis and interpretation of the "rationality" of these changes and Mao's economic policies in terms of both social and economic objectives. The chapter discusses long range implications of the purge of the scientific and management elite and stress on mass participation in China's modernization process and in several entires about the effects of the Cultural Revolution on the economy.
