ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the significance of the Linguistic Survey of India. It outlines its stages of development and shows how the Survey shaped and stimulated publications on Indian languages. The Survey’s different aims reflected its multifaceted nature as a scientific tome for linguists, manual for district officers, and work of reference for an educated transcontinental public.
