ABSTRACT

Switzerland is an important transit country for freight traffic through Europe, and its population is very much concerned by the pollution and the congestion that road traffic creates over its network. Indeed, the geographic configuration of the country, its circuitous and mountainous network, tend to increase these problems and their impacts on the population, while the natural beauty of the country and its important tourism activity militate in favour of their control. These concerns led the Swiss government to impose some restrictions on trucking over its territory: since the early seventies, transport movements by trucks of more than 28 tons are forbidden in Switzerland, and trucking is not allowed during the night and on Sundays.
