ABSTRACT
Nietzsche’s reception by, and influence on, the Frankfurt School is significant and complex. This chapter focuses narrowly on the very distinct receptions of Nietzsche’s philosophy in the work of Adorno and of Habermas. It does so on the grounds that the contrasting relationships of the early and later Frankfurt School to Nietzsche also reveal a central tension within the Frankfurt School between two distinct approaches to the tasks of Critical Theory.
