ABSTRACT

Radio Cultural station of the Canaries (ECCA) is a very special institution, a radio broadcasting station converted into an educational centre. The body which owns Radio ECCA, the Society of Jesus, granted the Spanish Ministry of Education the use of all the property of the station for ‘adult education and experiments in distance education’. Radio ECCA was created in order to provide education for the adult population. The student is required to respond to the radio teacher by writing on the lesson master sheet during the course of the broadcast. Radio ECCA has a Pedagogical Department whose function is to devise courses. Radio ECCA possesses its own print workshop which handles all its printed materials. A perennial problem in adult education is how to persuade the potential student to enrol on a course. The ECCA system offers much the same opportunity for assessment as a conventional institution and the entire procedure is organised with great care.
