ABSTRACT

Author’s Aims James Surowiecki’s main goal in The Wisdom of Crowds was to bring to modern light the centuries old theory of collective intelligence.* He was wildly successful in this aim, especially due to his fluid and captivating use of historic and present-day case study examples. Surowiecki also intended The Wisdom of Crowds to be a primer for leaders looking to apply this concept to decision-making within their own organizations. After priming readers on the theory and showcasing examples of application, Surowiecki provides the criterion he deems necessary for the theory to work in practice and gives examples of the type of problems this theory is best suited for. His ultimate aim is to show leaders how they can gain better insight, at less cost, by employing the collective knowledge of their own organization rather than chasing after and paying a heavy premium for expert knowledge.
