ABSTRACT
Careful consideration of what constitutes a region and how the national economy may be subdivided into a system of regions would seem an essential prerequisite for the analysis of regional phenomena. However, the definition of an economic region is rather ambiguous. Certain authors (see, e.g., Leontief) even have the idea that the definition of an economic region has to be looked upon as a political option.
