ABSTRACT

Technological innovations drive the economy and the demand for new skill sets and knowledge. Changing economic conditions together with politics drive the budgets for education. Education also has its own economics. As jobs are disappearing and new ones are created, the educational system is challenged to stay relevant, that is not educating for the disappearing ones and preparing for the newly created ones. The jobs that people work in are changing in the wake of the technological advances. The technological changes that drive the need for change in education also come to the aid of education through the economics of abundance. The scarcest resource in society, in general, and in education in particular, is talent. The main scarce resource in teaching is the talent of teachers. Unattractive career perspectives for lecturers and restrictive regulations will have to be changed in order to attract more teachers.
