ABSTRACT

The lean tools and methods of A3 thinking and performance management are the beating heart of a learning organization. Lean provides several powerful tools that help implement goal setting and progress tracking: A3 thinking, Kaizen and Kata techniques, and visual progress boards. A3 thinking is a technique in which a whole project is consolidated on an A3 paper. In Lean Education, students tune their own goals in the process of writing their A3. Using progress tracking boards and A3’s, the student and teacher visualize the target condition. The students develop some skills in addition to the theory they have learned and discussed in the sessions. In education, the principle applies to both the learning of the individual student and the way the school organizes the teaching and learning. The goals and sub-goals of smaller teaching units should be discussed with the students in order for them to really understand what they are about.
