ABSTRACT

Experience of nature, i.e. the unified action of perception and conception, is an imaginative affair where metaphor and narrative play central roles. At the centre of experience of human-scale physical phenomena, we find forces of nature that form the core of narrative understanding of nature. For this reason, we deliberately design stories of forces of nature – light, water, wind, fire, ice, electricity, and so on – to train student teachers and for use in primary science education. Here, we describe such stories and use our analysis to demonstrate that metaphor and narrative are deeply entwined.
