ABSTRACT

FROM 1884 (when we saw the Great Northern second period ofgreat extension closed with the completion of the Thornton and Keighley line) until the date we have now reached-the autumn of 1888 —the mileage of the Company had increased no more than from 784 to 791. But an arrangement had now to be recorded which had the effect of adding immediately thirteen miles to the system, and which led, as we shall see, to a much larger addition afterwards. This was the acquirement jointly with the Midland Company of the " western section " of the Eastern and Midlands system.
