ABSTRACT

I now propose to accompany the enthusiastic reader on five separate journeys, by road, through Ceylon. I have chosen the motor rather than the more picturesque bullock-cart as a means of conveyance since in the latter, moving at the normal pace of two miles an hour, it would take several years of unbroken travel to cover the different routes I have selected. I have also spurned the railways; firstly because most visitors to the island usually favour a motor or motor-coach and, secondly, because I myself never travelled in a train in Ceylon. I am told, however, that this was a mistake on my part.
