The presentation notation used in this section is based on the Bongardt paper [6].

Since the early 1970s the Sheth-Uicker formulation [50] has been the natural choice in our mechanism modeling, but in 2013 this formulation was revisited by Bongardt and the generic features of this formulation were pointed out more clearly. In the precursor book [51] we chose a more straightforward and explicit mechanism formulation, but in order to use a more generic mathematical symbolism, a subset of Bongardt’s formulation is used in this presentation.
