ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the role of the prison will be analyzed in processes of violent, extremist radicalization and the guidelines for prevention and intervention. A review of the situation will be carried out relating to the European prison systems, the research in this field, the recommendations of groups of experts from international organizations and experiences that show promise in addressing this phenomenon. A model is proposed centred on detection, prevention and intervention. An integral and effective model of addressing radicalization in prison environments should be based on the detection, evaluation and assessment of risk and on the development of a prison environment centred on dynamic security. It also requires an intervention led to respond to the factors of risk and necessities for reintegration for both vulnerable individuals and those already in the process of radicalization. The link between social environments and the preparation of a process for returning to a life of liberty are an essential component of the model, for which it is necessary to have the social fabric of the person and social resources act as a bridge between prison and the community.
